Publish everywhere listeners buy and borrow: how Publisher prepares, submits, and manages store review, royalties, and account setup.

Publisher is a custom quote per book, with 10 finished hours included and an extra-hour rate of $20/hr (see Publisher pack pricing). It covers scored production and, when selected, done-for-you publishing everywhere listeners buy and borrow books. Lex prepares, submits, and manages store review across major retail and library channels, including fixes and resubmissions when a platform needs changes. Lex takes no royalties. On the wide stores, Lex keeps nothing. Audible / Amazon is a direct Lex upload with no partner fee: 30% of the sale price, Audible's non-exclusive rate since May 2026 (25% before). Spotify is a direct upload with no partner fee: 50% of the price you set on à la carte sales. On wide stores, the distribution partner keeps 20% of net, deducted before remittance. The author receives 80% of net.

Key terms: Publisher is quoted per book. Lex takes no royalties. Spotify follows its own account and payout setup. On wide stores, the distribution partner keeps 20% of net. Setup and review time depend on the account model, title, and retailer; Lex manages that review through every fix and resubmission.

Why is Spotify handled differently?

Spotify is the one store that lets you own the account and still let us do the work, so we treat it as its own lane. Spotify for Authors supports team members: you create a free account in your name (about 15 minutes, once), add your payout details, and invite publishing@lex-books.com with editing access. We upload the files, cover, metadata, and the digital-voice disclosure from inside your account. Spotify pays you directly, with no partner fee: 50% of the price you set on à la carte sales. Premium-plan listening is paid from Spotify's monthly pool by share of hours listened. We never touch that money and never hold your login.

Those two rates come straight from Spotify's audiobook distribution terms, last updated May 4, 2026. Spotify runs two models. A La Carte is a single purchase and pays 50% of the suggested retail price you set. Pool Subscription is Premium listening: subscriber fees go into a per-market pool, paid out by your share of total audiobook consumption. Spotify sends a sales report within 30 days of each period's end and pays in US dollars within 30 days of that report.

There is a second reason Spotify stands alone. Spotify does not forward digital-voice titles onward to other retailers, so even if you wanted one upload to cover everything, Spotify would still need its own submission. Since it has to be separate anyway, we make it the store where you keep every cent.

What we actually do on every other store

Audible/Amazon is a direct Lex upload, like Spotify. Every other store goes through the wide publishing path: major retail and library channels. Lex prepares, submits, and manages store review, including fixes and resubmissions when a platform needs changes. We report which listings clear. The distribution partner keeps 20% of net on those wide channels only, not on Audible or Spotify; the author receives 80% of net. Individual store policies still apply, and Lex does not claim that every store automatically accepts every audiobook.

The royalty line is the easy part. The work is the submission itself. Here is what Lex does for every Publisher title:

  • We crop and rescale the cover to exactly 2400×2400 JPG with an alphanumeric filename. Dark edges and vignettes that read as letterboxing get cropped about 2 to 3% and rescaled so retailer QC does not bounce the art for side borders.
  • We check every track for mean volume between −23 and −18 dB and peak at or under −1 dB. Short opening credits with silence pads often drift quiet; we gain them up. Hot chapters get pulled down before upload.
  • We pad one to five seconds of true digital silence at both ends of every file (opening, closing, sample, every chapter). We target two seconds. Bare ends and mid-word cutoffs bounce.
  • We cut opening and closing credits as separate tracks, each under three minutes. The opening credit carries title, author, and narrator, and the closing credit carries the ending cue. We name and order them so the portal does not confuse them with the retail sample.
  • We cut the retail sample, name it sample.mp3, and keep it strictly under 300.0 seconds. Exactly five minutes fails. Prefer about 4:30 to 4:54 after the silence pads.
  • We upload chapterized MP3s in correct order (44.1 kHz stereo, store-safe bitrate), opening first, closing last, sample in its own slot.
  • We fill in the metadata end to end: title, subtitle, author display name, series, description (50 to 2,000 characters), language, abridged/explicit/public-domain flags, up to three genres, semicolon-separated keywords, sales rights, print and audiobook copyright owner plus year, MSRP. You confirm the sheet by email; we type every field into the portal.
  • We set the Digital-voice / AI Voice flag, name the engine, and leave the narrator field as the store's auto-set AI Voice label. We do not duplicate the store's prepended disclosure line in the description. Channels that reject AI narration are skipped automatically.
  • We keep the tax and payment profile approved so remittances can flow. Photo ID and publisher name are already handled on our side for concierge titles.
  • We accept the distribution agreement, review the channels, and submit for review. We watch retailer feedback and rework anything flagged (silence, duration, cover, loudness) so you never see the bounce email.
  • When listings clear, you get a live-links summary with every store URL that actually accepted the title. Review timing belongs to each retailer.

We learned this the expensive way. In August 2026 two of our own wide submissions were bounced twice: first for missing head/tail silence and a sample three hundredths of a second over the five-minute limit, then again for cover borders, opening credits under −23 dB, and chapters peaking hotter than −1 dB. Every one of those is now a hard gate before we touch the upload button. The store-by-store breakdown is at lex.audio/distribution.

Two honest caveats. Apple reviews third-party AI audio title by title and may decline. Lex submits and reports either way. Audible/Amazon is a direct Lex upload under Lex's publisher agreement, not a separate ACX project, because ACX does not accept externally produced AI narration.

What do you actually have to do?

Two things, both once. First, the Spotify for Authors account and the team invite, about 15 minutes with a plain-English checklist. Second, the payout link for the wide-store royalties, about five minutes and it works on a phone. Everything in the list above is Lex.

If you already have a Spotify for Authors account, even better. Invite us in and we use what you have.

What is non-negotiable?

  • Nothing is exclusive. Any store whose terms would lock the title is skipped, and you can pull the book from any store with 30 days' notice.
  • The masters and the rights are yours. You get the final chapter MP3s, cover, and metadata sheet, plus the signed paperwork, whether or not you ever use us again.
  • Disclosure is always on. Every store that accepts AI narration asks for a flag, and we set it correctly everywhere. Hiding AI narration is the only way to actually get in trouble in this market.
  • No separate ACX upload. Lex uploads to Audible directly. We will not misrepresent AI audio as human narration to get around a store policy.
  • We never hold your money on Spotify and never keep your credentials anywhere.

How long does it take?

  1. Production finishes. You approve the narrator, the sample, and the final master.
  2. We build the retail package and run store QC. Cover crop, loudness pass, silence pads, opening/closing credits, retail sample under 300s, chapterized MP3s, metadata sheet. You confirm or correct by email.
  3. You do the two setup steps. Spotify account plus invite, and the payout link. Roughly 20 minutes total.
  4. We upload everywhere within one business day.
  5. Stores review on each retailer's timeline, and we send a live-links summary with every store URL as listings clear.

Publishing on Spotify: Questions Authors Ask

Can you publish an audiobook on Spotify yourself?

Yes. Spotify runs opt-in audiobook distribution through Spotify for Authors, and the account is free and in your name. On Publisher, you invite publishing@lex-books.com as a team member, and Lex uploads the files, metadata, and digital-voice disclosure from inside your account. Spotify pays you directly, and Lex never holds your login.

How much does an author make per audiobook on Spotify?

Spotify pays 50% of the price you set on à la carte sales. Premium-plan listening is paid from Spotify's monthly pool by share of hours listened. Lex takes no royalties. Under Spotify's terms, you get a sales report within 30 days of each period's end and payment in US dollars within 30 days of that report.

Should I stay exclusive with Audible or go wide to Spotify?

For an AI-narrated book, exclusive is off the table, because ACX does not accept externally produced AI narration. Audible is a wide, non-exclusive listing. The exclusive Audible rate does not apply. Publisher lists Audible non-exclusive alongside Spotify, and any store can be pulled on 30 days' notice. For other titles, run the exclusive vs. wide royalty math.

Could Spotify change how it pays for audiobooks?

Yes. Spotify's audiobook distribution terms, last updated May 4, 2026, let Spotify add or remove distribution models from time to time, with notice on its website or by email. Rights holders are included in any new model automatically. Lex keeps your Spotify for Authors account in your name, so those notices reach you directly.
