Summary

An audiobook runs about 9,300 words per finished hour. Estimate audiobook length from your word count, see genre lengths, and what runtime costs.

Every number in audiobook production keys off one figure: finished hours. Narrator quotes, booth schedules, editing invoices, and retail price bands all scale with it.

So before you ask what an audiobook costs or what to charge, you need its length. This post is for indie authors and small publishers who have a word count and a budget question. You'll get the audiobook words per finished hour figure we plan with, plus the formula to turn a manuscript into runtime.

After that come worked examples by genre and the cost math that follows from length. We produce and price in finished hours every day at Lex. We'll show the math instead of asking you to trust it.

How Many Words Are in a Finished Hour of Audio?

A finished hour is edited, ready-to-publish audio, roughly 9,300 words. A 75,000-word novel is about 8 finished hours. Divide your word count by 9,300 and you have a planning estimate of your audiobook's length.

We price in finished hours, and so do the narrator rates below. PFH stands for per finished hour, the rate for each hour of final audio a listener hears. Anything cut in editing doesn't count.

Booth time is a different number. A narrator takes 2 to 4 hours in the booth per finished hour. An 8-hour novel is a 16- to 32-hour recording job before editing starts.

Other planning numbers you'll see differ from ours because narrator pace differs. A slower read puts fewer words in each hour, so the same book runs longer.

The research gives a range. Marc Brysbaert's peer-reviewed reading-rate meta-analysis (Ghent University, Journal of Memory and Language, 2019) says audiobooks are spoken at 140 to 180 words per minute. That line is a passing note in the paper's discussion, not a measured study of narrators.

Our 9,300 works out to 155 words per minute (9,300 ÷ 60), inside that band. The same paper puts the lab average for reading aloud at 183 words per minute. Brysbaert calls that rate unrealistic for someone reading aloud for several hours a day, which is why audiobook planning rates sit below it.

What Is the Reading Speed of an Audiobook Narrator?

Somewhere between 140 and 180 words per minute, per the Brysbaert range, and it moves with the narrator and the text. That spread is why every guide quotes a different words-per-hour figure. Here is what each pace does to the same 75,000-word novel (our arithmetic, rounded to the minute):

Narrator paceWords per finished hour75,000-word novel (estimate)
140 wpm8,4008 h 56 min
150 wpm9,0008 h 20 min
155 wpm9,3008 h 4 min
165 wpm9,9007 h 35 min

Twenty-five words a minute separates the fastest and slowest rows. On this book, that is about 1 hour 21 minutes of runtime. Use 9,300 to plan, and expect your real number to land somewhere in that spread.

How to Estimate Audiobook Length From a Manuscript

Four steps get you from word count to runtime. The first one is where most estimates go wrong.

  1. Count only the words that will be read aloud. Cut the half-title, copyright page, ISBN blocks, and ads for your other titles. Our guide to format a manuscript for narration lists what to strip.
  2. Divide the readable word count by 9,300. The result is your finished hours as a decimal.
  3. Convert the decimal to hours and minutes. Multiply the part after the point by 60.
  4. Plan with the rule, and price from the files. Your actual runtime is known only once the audio is produced.

Here is the formula run on four manuscript lengths. These are worked examples, not typical books:

Readable words÷ 9,300Estimated runtime
60,0006.45about 6 h 27 min (6.5 hours)
75,0008.06about 8 h 4 min
90,0009.68about 9 h 41 min
120,000 (fantasy)12.90about 12 h 54 min (13 hours)

The rule gets you close. It won't be exact. For an 85,600-word novel we finished in August, the rule of thumb said about 9 hours 12 minutes.

It came in at 9 hours 58 minutes, 46 minutes over the estimate. Pacing and dialogue moved the number, and so did the scene breaks.

You can run the math backward too. A 9-hour audiobook is about 83,700 words (9 × 9,300). That helps when you're comparing your book to an audiobook you've already heard.

The fastest way to replace the estimate with a real pace is to hear your own text read. Send the manuscript and get your first chapter performed free. Then measure that chapter's runtime against its word count.

How Long Is an Audiobook by Genre?

Lengths vary inside every genre, so count your own words before you trust any category. What we can give you are a few sourced word counts, converted to runtime. Every hour figure below is our arithmetic at 9,300 words per finished hour.

The cleanest definitions come from science fiction and fantasy. SFWA's Nebula length categories, set by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, treat 40,000 words or more as a novel. A novella runs 17,500 to under 40,000 words, a novelette 7,500 to under 17,500, and a short story under 7,500.

Those are award-eligibility lines for the Nebula Awards. They are not industry-wide standards or typical lengths. They still give you a floor: a novel by that definition runs at least 4.3 finished hours.

Romance runs on publisher lines. Harlequin's submission guidelines say its series romances are usually shorter than trade romances, which can run 100,000 words or more. At 9,300 words per hour, a 100,000-word trade romance is about 10.8 finished hours.

Form or genreWord countEstimated finished hours
Short story (SFWA)under 7,500under 0.8 (about 48 min)
Novelette (SFWA)7,500 to under 17,5000.8 to 1.9
Novella (SFWA)17,500 to under 40,0001.9 to 4.3
Novel (SFWA)40,000 or more4.3 or more
Trade romance (Harlequin)can run 100,000 or more10.8 or more
Fantasy (Lex example)120,000about 13

These genres are where the listening money goes. The June 2026 Audio Publishers Association survey puts General Fiction at 27% of 2025 revenue, the largest share. Science fiction and fantasy, romance, and mystery/thriller/suspense made up the other top genres.

Why Audiobook Length Drives Cost

Our production cost figures put human narration at $200 to $400 per finished hour, plus $75 to $150 per finished hour for editing, proofing, and mastering. Every extra hour lands on the invoice. A human-narrated 75,000-word novel costs $2,400 to $5,850 produced.

Length multiplies twice. The per-hour rates scale with runtime, and so does the work behind them. A narrator takes 2 to 4 hours in the booth per finished hour. Our audiobook production cost breakdown compares that human studio route with royalty share and with Lex.

Here is the narration line alone at three lengths. These are estimates from the formula, before editing, proofing, and mastering:

Readable wordsEstimated finished hoursEstimated booth hoursNarration at $200 to $400 per finished hour
60,0006.513 to 26about $1,290 to $2,580
75,0008.116 to 32about $1,610 to $3,230
120,00012.926 to 52about $2,580 to $5,160

The 120,000-word fantasy costs twice as much to narrate as the 60,000-word book. Add the editing, proofing, and mastering line and the gap widens. For the full invoice line by line, see what audiobook production actually costs.

Lex prices a book as a flat pack. Each pack covers 10 finished hours, and longer books pay a fixed rate per extra hour:

Lex packPriceFinished hours includedExtra-hour rate
Voiceover$49 one-time10$5/hr
Studio$99 one-time10$10/hr
Publishercustom quote per book10$20/hr

The 60,000-word and 75,000-word books fit inside the 10 included hours. The 120,000-word fantasy runs about 3 hours over. That adds an estimated $15 on Voiceover or $30 on Studio. Full details are on the Lex production packages page.

Runtime also sets what listeners pay. Audible sets the price. Runtime decides which price band the book lands in, and our guide shows how to price your audiobook by length on Audible and every other store.

Audiobook Length Questions

How Many Words Per Finished Hour Is Standard for Audiobook Narration?

Roughly 9,300 words per finished hour, which works out to 155 words per minute. Treat it as a planning estimate, since pace varies by narrator and text.

What Does PFH Mean?

PFH means per finished hour: a rate charged for each hour of final, edited audio. Booth hours and cut retakes are left out of the count.

How Long Is a 60,000-Word Audiobook?

About 6.5 finished hours (6 hours 27 minutes) at 9,300 words per hour. Your real runtime is set once the audio is produced.

How Long Does It Take to Record an Audiobook?

A narrator takes 2 to 4 hours in the booth per finished hour. An 8-hour novel is 16 to 32 hours of recording.

Summary

A finished hour is edited, ready-to-publish audio, roughly 9,300 words. Divide your readable words by 9,300, leaving out front matter and ads. That gives you a planning estimate of your audiobook's length.

Plan with the rule, and confirm from the files. Our 85,600-word novel was estimated at 9 hours 12 minutes and came in at 9 hours 58 minutes. Length also multiplies human cost twice, through per-hour rates and through booth time.

Next, run your own word count through the formula. Then check the cost breakdown and the pricing guide above to see what that runtime means for your budget and your list price. When the files are ready, publish your audiobook wide.
