AI audiobooks, produced like the real thing

An AI audiobook is a book narrated by a synthetic voice. The voice is the easy part. Casting, direction, mastering, and distribution decide whether the book sells. Lex handles all of it for $49 or $99, one time, and the files are yours.

How do you make an audiobook with AI?

Eight steps, whatever tool you use. Only the person doing them changes. Step 4 is the slow one, because listening back against the text takes at least the runtime of the book. A 75,000-word novel runs about 8 finished hours.

  1. 1

Clean the manuscript and list every name and invented word for pronunciation.

  2. 2

Pick the kind of tool, which decides who does the remaining steps.

  3. 3

Cast a voice for the genre and test one full chapter first.

  4. 4

Generate the audio and listen back against the text, line by line.

  5. 5

Fix the seams between generations and retake every line that misses.

  6. 6

Master each chapter to the retailer's loudness and silence specs.

  7. 7

Set the metadata and the AI-narration disclosure for each store.

  8. 8

Upload to each store, or hand distribution to a publisher.

With Lex, a producer does steps 3 through 7 before you hear a word. The full walkthrough is in our guide to AI audiobook generators.

Does Audible accept AI-narrated audiobooks?

Yes, through two of the three routes. ACX self-serve requires human narration. Amazon Virtual Voice is a KDP program that is invite-only and keeps the audio inside Amazon. A publisher agreement is the other door, and it is how Lex uploads Publisher titles to Audible with the AI-narration flag set.

Read the route-by-route breakdown in Audible AI narration for indie authors, or compare Virtual Voice with Lex on the Amazon Virtual Voice alternative page.

How can you tell if an audiobook is narrated by AI?

Start with the store listing. Stores require a label, and each one words it differently.

  • Audible shows "Narrator: Virtual Voice" in the narrator field. Search "virtual voice" to find them.
  • Spotify adds a sentence to the description when the author ticks the digital voice narration box.
  • Kobo and Google Play list a "synthesised" or "synthesized" voice as the narrator.
  • Apple Books lists its own program as "Narrated by Apple Books".

By ear, listen for seams. A long AI read is generated in chunks, and each chunk starts cold. The narrator finishes a paragraph and the next one comes back at a different pitch or energy. Listeners start noticing a pitch jump around 20 Hz. Our post on why AI narrators change voice mid-chapter explains the cause and the fix.

Which AI audiobook tool is best?

There are three kinds. Free generators and store tools cost nothing and give you the least. DIY voice studios like ElevenLabs and Spoken give you an engine, and you are the producer. Done-for-you production like Lex hands you a finished book. Pick the kind first, then the tool.

Are AI audiobooks free?

Some tools cost $0 upfront. Amazon Virtual Voice is free and pays a 40% royalty on Amazon and Audible, but Amazon retains the file. ElevenReader Publishing streams your book free inside its app, with no audio to export.

Free is a price, paid in files, stores, and listens. If Amazon owns the audio, a Spotify or Kobo edition starts with a new production. The switching steps are on the Virtual Voice page.

Where can you sell AI audiobooks?

Most major stores take them with disclosure. ACX self-serve is the exception.

Full store-by-store detail is in where to sell AI-narrated audiobooks. To have it done for you, see Lex audiobook distribution. Lex takes no royalties. On Audible and Spotify you keep the full author share. On every other store the distribution partner keeps 20% of net.

How much do AI audiobooks cost compared with a human narrator?

A human-narrated 75,000-word novel costs $2,400 to $5,850 produced. That is narration at $200 to $400 per finished hour, plus editing, proofing, and mastering. A Lex production is $49 for narration or $99 fully scored, for 10 finished hours.

The line-by-line breakdown is on the audiobook production cost page. Human narration still wins when the performance is the product, such as a memoir read by its author.
